Tickets and passes
The ticket or pass you need depends mainly on where your journey starts and ends. Within the STIBM area, the integrated fare system applies; when a journey includes a place outside STIBM, tickets for the chosen origin-destination route apply instead. There are also tickets and passes covering much of Lombardy's public transport network, as well as a few situations with specific rules. For journeys outside STIBM, this guide only covers rail travel.
Within STIBM
STIBM (the integrated fare system for the Milan-Monza Brianza mobility area) covers every municipality in the Metropolitan City of Milan and the Province of Monza and Brianza, as well as some municipalities in neighbouring provinces. The area is divided into fare zones from Mi1 to Mi9, with Milan at its centre.
If both the origin and destination are within STIBM, an STIBM ticket or pass is used. The ticket required depends on the zones covered by the journey, not on the mode or line used. Within its area of validity it can be used across the services included in the system, including metro, trams, buses and regional and suburban trains.
Tickets
- Single ticket: validity depends on the number of zones purchased, in Milan the minimum ticket is Mi1-Mi3 and is valid for 90 minutes from first validation
- 10-ticket carnet: contains 10 single tickets for the zones purchased, each ticket has the same validity as the corresponding single ticket
- 24-hour ticket: valid for 24 hours from first validation, with unlimited travel within the zones purchased
- 3-day ticket: valid from the day of first validation until the end of service on the third consecutive day, with unlimited travel within the zones purchased
Passes
Passes allow unlimited travel within the zones purchased. The ordinary options are:
- weekly: from Monday to Sunday of the same week, until the end of service on Sunday
- monthly: for one calendar month
- annual: for 12 consecutive calendar months
STIBM fares
Outside Milan, the minimum fare is 2 zones, even when both the origin and destination are in the same fare zone. If an outer-area journey crosses Milan, zone Mi1 must also be included.
Interchanges outside STIBM
In some cases an STIBM journey may include an intermediate stop outside the area solely in order to change train or bus. These places include, for example, Saronno, Treviglio and Busto Arsizio.
This rule applies to the interchange only: it does not make those places normal origins or destinations for an STIBM journey. For routes of this kind, it is advisable to check the ticket shown by the official journey-planning and sales systems.
To/from STIBM
This section covers rail journeys where one end is inside STIBM and the other is outside it. These journeys use railway tickets for the chosen origin-destination route.
Tickets and carnets
- Single railway ticket: valid for one journey on the stated route and direction, with a time validity of 6 hours
- 10-journey carnet: contains 10 tickets and can be used in either direction, once activated each individual ticket is valid for 6 hours
Passes
Railway passes are valid in both directions on the stated route and allow unlimited journeys during their validity period. The ordinary options are:
- weekly: from Monday to Sunday
- monthly: for one calendar month
- annual: from the first day of the first month to the last day of the twelfth month
Railway fares
Arriving in Milan by train
Any Trenord ticket, carnet or pass with Milan as its destination may be used across the entire urban railway network and all lines of the Passante railway. You do not therefore have to end your journey at the first Milan station reached by your train.
This applies to the urban railway network. A normal railway ticket or pass does not automatically include the metro, trams and buses.
TrenoMilano
For regular rail travel between Milan and a place outside STIBM, with use of Milan's urban transport as well, there is the TrenoMilano pass.
It is an integrated monthly pass, valid from the first to the last day of the calendar month, covering the chosen rail route to or from Milan, the whole urban railway network and ATM urban services. It is issued for routes between Milan and places outside STIBM. The price depends on the distance band.
Outside STIBM
This section only covers rail journeys where both the origin and destination are outside STIBM. For normal rail journeys within Lombardy, tickets are linked to the route between the two places.

Prices depend on the distance band for the route and follow the same railway fare table shown in the previous section.
Across Lombardy
For travel using several forms of public transport in different parts of Lombardy, there are Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia (IVOL) tickets and passes. They cover much of the region's local public transport network, including buses, trams, metro services and regional and suburban trains, with some exclusions and specific rules.
Tickets
IVOL tickets allow unlimited travel on the services covered during their validity.

The 7-day ticket is not a weekly pass: its seven days run consecutively from the day of validation.
Passes

Special cases
Malpensa
Journeys to or from Malpensa Aeroporto T1 and T2 stations have specific fare rules. The fare depends on the selected origin-destination route.
Between Milan and Malpensa Aeroporto T1 or T2, the adult fare is € 15,00 one way and € 25,00 return. The return journey can be made on the same day with a ticket bought through physical sales channels, or within 30 days with the digital return ticket bought online.
IVOL tickets for 1, 2, 3 and 7 days are not valid when Malpensa Aeroporto T1 or T2 is the origin or destination.
Outside Lombardy
Rail journeys between places in different Italian regions may use supra-regional fares. There is no single price: the amount depends on the route and is calculated when the ticket is purchased.
Switzerland
For journeys between Lombardy and the Canton of Ticino, cross-border tickets and passes are available, allowing the journey to be made with a single ticket.
In Lombardy the integrated ticket can be used on Trenord Regional and Suburban trains; in Ticino it includes services in the Arcobaleno fare network within the zones needed to reach the origin or destination. A one-way cross-border ticket is valid on the stated date and has an overall validity of 4 hours.
There is no single price: the fare is calculated by adding the Trenord railway portion in Lombardy to the required Arcobaleno zones in Ticino. Some cross-border routes have specific conditions.
